FAQs

  • Do you use treats?

Yes. The training methods I use rely on positive reinforcement, meaning we reward behaviours we want to see more of. Most dogs are naturally food-motivated, so using treats can be a very effective way to help them learn.

For dogs that are less food-motivated, we’ll find an alternative that works for them - such as toys, play, or affection.

Please note: Choosing not to use food in training sessions for food-motivated dogs may slow progress. I’ll always provide advice on suitable treats and adjusting meal portions on training days.

  • What if my dogs doesn't like strangers/men?

That’s absolutely okay - many dogs are wary of strangers, especially at first. I always work at your dog’s pace, using gradual, positive introductions to help them feel comfortable.

If your dog is particularly anxious or fearful, we can start with a video consultation or create a behaviour modification plan to build confidence slowly. I’ve successfully gained the trust of dogs in a kennel setting who were initially reactive towards men. Through patience and consistent positive experiences, I was able to build trusting, rewarding relationships with them.

  • Do you come to my home?

In most cases, yes. Depending on the service, sessions may take place in your home, garden, or local area - for example, puppy training sessions in your living room, behaviour modification sessions in your garden, or collecting your dog for a training walk.

Please note: For your reassurance, I hold a current (November 2025) clear DBS check - confirming my suitability to work in client’s homes and handle dogs responsibly. Additionally, sessions can be provided via video call if required.

  • Why can't I come on 1-on-1 training walks?

My 1-to-1 training walks are designed to focus entirely on your dog without distractions. This allows me to work on specific training goals - such as loose-lead walking, recall, or confidence - in a calm and structured way.

If you’d like to be directly involved in your dog’s training, a behaviour modification session is more suitable. These are tailored to include you so we can work together on handling techniques and building consistency at home.

  • Why don't you use punishment?

I don’t use punitive methods simply because there’s a kinder alternative. While punishment can suppress behaviour, it works by creating fear or avoidance which can damage trust, increase anxiety, and can create new behavioural issues over time.

Positive reinforcement focuses on teaching dogs what we want them to do rather than scaring them away from what we don’t want. It builds confidence, strengthens the dog-human relationship, and creates learning that is far more stable. The scientific literature consistently shows that reinforcement based approaches are not only effective, but support better emotional welfare and long term behaviour outcomes.

Both methods can change behaviour. The difference is the emotional cost.

I choose the method that protects dogs, supports their wellbeing, and builds behaviour through clarity, trust and safety. I will be writing a blog soon exploring this topic in more depth, including research from both sides of the debate.

  • What happens if it rains?

Sessions will usually still go ahead in light to moderate rain. In cases of severe weather or unsafe conditions, the session will be rescheduled to a new timeslot at no extra cost.

  • My dog has allergies/a special diet, can you still train him/her?

Yes, absolutely. Please let me know about any allergies or special dietary requirements before I travel for your session so that I can make suitable arrangements.

For example, I can provide grain-free or hypoallergenic treats at no additional cost. If your dog requires more specialised treats, owners may be asked to supply them or cover the difference in cost - this will always be discussed beforehand.

  • What areas do you cover?

Training sessions and walks are available within a 15-mile radius of Cromer. Travel beyond this distance can be arranged with an additional mileage fee, of 0.45p per mile for the round trip.

  • What if my dog bites or behaves aggressively?

Safety is always my top priority. If a dog displays signs of aggression or bites during a session, the training may be paused immediately for everyone’s safety. We’ll discuss the next steps, which may include a behaviour modification plan or referral to a Clinical Animal Behaviourist or veterinary professional.

In the event of a serious bite or if public safety is at risk, I may be required to notify the relevant authorities in line with UK legislation.

  • Are you insured?

Yes. Beano’s Canine Academy is fully insured for public liability and professional indemnity.

  • Do you train all breeds and ages?

Yes - every dog is an individual, and I adapt my approach to suit their age, breed, and temperament. However, I can only work with dogs who are fully insured and covered under a valid pet insurance policy - I require insurance company name and policy number prior to booking.

Please note: In compliance with UK law Dogs listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act can only be accepted if they are legally exempt.
